Kelly started with Candy Tappin prior to 1970 and has watched the firm grow from strength to strength over the last 40 years. After recently selling his interest in Diprose Miller Limited he continues to act as a "consultant" to a significant client base, but has finally cut back (a little) on his working week.
Born and raised on a dairy farm in Matamata, Kelly attended Matamata College and went on to complete his accounting qualification extramurally. Since then he has had a lifetime involvement with the agriculture sector that still continues today.
He has been closely involved with a number of large development projects over the last few years, including the formation and building of NZ Dairies Ltd, and has acted as both Chairman and director. He opposed the foreign ownership of NZ Dairies by overseas interests and maintains a personal ownership interest in South Island dairy operations. He is a director of the North Otago Irrigation Company.
Kelly has had a keen interest in athletics in the Te Aroha area for many years and is best known for his coaching abilities. For relaxation Kelly enjoys rugby, tramping and spending time at the beach. The arrival of grandchildren over the last few years has given Kelly and his wife Val a new interest and they are now focused on spending more time with family.
Kelly is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Primary Industry Management and a Fellow of the New Zealand Trustees Association.
